The plants around here are finally coming back to life (and I am talking about the ones IN the house). When I first got here they were under so many layers of dust and their soil was so dry that they were at deaths door. I hacked them all right down to little stubs and have been watering them and tending them for months and months and they have slowly started making a comeback. That one is really starting to do well now. But my favorite is the banana leaf palm which has had two new leaves since I hacked it down and left it with just one leaf sticking out of a dead looking stalk.

Wow greenfingers! I seem to kill every plant that comes into my care... and believe me I do try and look after them as best I can! It's interesting that you say you chopped them all right off - I just did that to one of mine with no clue of whether you can or not... so there is hope!

I learned that from Lorraine Cameron. Apparently the theory is that when a plant is obviously struggling, you hack it right down to the nub (although I leave whatever is looking alive intact) and apparently the next season it grows again. She said that you are removing dead weight that is costing the plant energy and so it takes a time out in hibernation and revives itself in season with extra energy.... not sure if it's true... but it seems to be working for me!

I have definitely heard that, and they love to say "deadhead" flowers etc. but unfortunately they never explain how far back to cut, and what exactly "deadhead" means! So I just do my own thing. The plants seem to die whether I do it or not. LOL. I guess one day I should do a serious gardening on Google session!
